The story of the Loveable Loo:

Who would'a thunk it? A toilet that people love?

When Jenkins wrote the Humanure Handbook and thereby introduced the world to the "humanure toilet," he didn't expect people to write to him saying they love their little compost toilets, but many did. Lots of proud humanure composters sent photos of their loveable toilets, some of which are posted on the web. They built their own toilets from instructions also posted on the web.

It was only a matter of time before people starting asking Jenkins to provide them with these little toilets, already constructed. They wanted them for their homes, camps, cabins, cottages, and to keep in a basement corner for emergency use should the power go out. Well, Joe Jenkins has a lot of other things to do besides building toilets for people. Then serendipity happened.

A pair of young college students, one an architectural student and the other an engineering student, showed up at Jenkins shop looking for internship work in early 2007 and the Loveable Loo was born, available for purchase on the internet at the Josephjenkins.com online store.

We sold out of those Loveable Loos, but built another batch in 2008. Here is a video showing how we make the Loveable Loo Humanure Toilet.

What You Get With Your Loveable Loo:
Loveable Loo

1. The toilet itself: hemlock base (linseed oil finish), hinged 3/4" plywood top (matte urethane finish, 2 coats), with a solid oak toilet seat. The toilet can be additionally painted or varnished, if desired, but it's not necessary.
2. Four green 5 gallon receptacles, with lids (shipped separately).
The toilet is designed to fit these particular receptacles, so using your own receptacles won't work.
3. An instruction manual (can be read online).

4. A laminated "This is a Humanure Toilet" sign for posting by your toilet.

5. A copy of the Humanure handbook, 3rd edition, a $25 value.
6. A Reotemp 20" compost thermometer ($25.00 value)..

Your Total Cost = $180.00 plus S&H - Available Online or call 814-786-9085 - How It Works:
The Lovable Loo is a collection toilet. This is the toilet when not in use. A container of "cover material," such as sawdust, must be kept nearby at all times.
This is the toilet when in use. It should be located against a wall so the lid has something to lean against. A layer of cover material should always be in the bottom before use.
This is the toilet with both lids up - the best position for use as a urinal by men. Cover material should always cover the contents of the toilet to prevent odor.
This is the toilet with both lids up and the hinged top lifted. The receptacle is ready to be taken out and replaced with an empty one. The contents of the toilet should be composted in a bin or enclosed device.
